Division with a remainder

Checks that the dividend equals quotient × divisor + remainder.

How it is calculated

If the dividend is negative, the remainder is still taken to be zero or positive. The quotient may then sit one below what you get by simply dropping the fractional part.

Dividend = quotient × divisor + remainder

Where the numbers come from

  • Dividend
  • Divisor

Example

Dividing 17 by 5 gives quotient 3 and remainder 2, because 3 × 5 + 2 = 17.

Questions

Can the remainder equal the divisor?

No. Once the remainder catches the divisor, it is carried into the quotient.

Division by a negative number?

Yes. The remainder stays nonnegative.

Zero as the divisor?

Division by zero is not performed.
