Calculated in the browser

Characters in the text

It counts the text in the browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How it is calculated

A character here is one Unicode grapheme as JavaScript splits them, so an emoji usually counts as a single mark. In “no spaces” mode, spaces, tabs, and line breaks are removed.

Words are the pieces between spaces

Where the numbers come from

Example

The phrase “Hello, pals” has 11 characters, 10 without the space, and 2 words.

Questions

A leading space?

It counts in the total number of characters. For the word count, blank edges are trimmed.

A blank line between paragraphs?

It increases the number of lines, not the number of words.

Does the text go anywhere?

No, the count stays on this device.
