How it is calculated
A negative headwind component is a tailwind. Speed may be entered in any unit. The answer comes back in that same unit.
Crosswind = speed × sin(angle), headwind = speed × cos(angle)
Where the numbers come from
- Wind speed
- Angle to heading — unit in the field: °
Example
10 m/s at 90° gives a cross component of 10 and a headwind of 0.
Questions
Where is the angle measured from?
It depends on the direction of travel. Wind from the right and from the left gives the same crosswind in magnitude.
Gusts?
Enter the speed you want to split up. The calculator does not average it.
Knots and km/h?
Convert the speed in the converter first if you need another scale. The angle does not depend on the units of speed.
