How it is calculated
Drive makers usually treat a gigabyte as 10⁹ bytes. Operating systems often display a gibibyte, 2³⁰ bytes. The difference is already obvious once you reach terabytes.
Result = value × factor of the source unit / factor of the target unit
Where the numbers come from
- Value
- Source unit
Example
1 TB = 1 000 GB ≈ 0,909 TiB.
Questions
Why does the file “weigh less” than the number on the disk box?
Part of the difference is exactly 1000 against 1024. The rest may be system partitions.
Is a KB 1000 or 1024 here?
The “Kilobytes” row is 1000. The “Kibibytes” row is 1024.
Are bits included?
No. The list has only bytes and their multiples. A byte is 8 bits.
