Diluting a solution

Leave exactly one field empty.

How it is calculated

Units on the left and on the right must match: both in percent, for example, and both in millilitres. The calculator does not convert the numbers.

C1 × V1 = C2 × V2

Where the numbers come from

  • Starting concentration
  • Starting volume
  • Target concentration
  • Final volume

Example

To get from 10% down to 2% in a volume of 500, you need 100 of the starting solution. The diluent is 400.

Questions

How do I leave a field empty?

Clear the value. For the example, clear the starting volume and fill in the other three.

Is the solvent not always shown?

It appears when the final volume is larger than the starting one.

Mixing two strong solutions?

This formula is for diluting with a solvent that contains none of the substance, not for mixing two concentrates.
