Is the last day included?
The difference is built the way an age is: the same calendar day gives whole years and no extra day. The 29th minus the 1st is 28 days.
The 31st into a shorter month?
Missing days are borrowed from the previous month.
Several periods of work?
Work out each spell, then add the years and months by hand, carrying 12 months into a year.
