Pyramid

The volume is a third of a prism with the same base and height.

How it is calculated

The height is dropped perpendicular to the base. The slant height and a lateral edge are other lengths.

V = a² × h / 3

Where the numbers come from

  • Base side
  • Height

Example

A base side of 3 and a height of 4 give a volume of 3 × 3 × 4 / 3 = 12.

Questions

The base is not a square?

Then work out its area first, and multiply by the height and by 1/3 yourself.

A tetrahedron?

A regular tetrahedron has a triangular base, so this formula does not fit it.

A frustum of a pyramid?

There is a separate calculator for that.
