How it is calculated
BMI = mass in kilograms / height in metres, squared. The bounds on the screen are the adult WHO bands: below 18,5 is low, 18,5–24,9 is the usual range, 25–29,9 is high, and beyond that are the grades of obesity.
BMI = kg / m²
Where the numbers come from
- Weight — unit in the field: kg
- Height — unit in the field: cm
Example
70 kg at a height of 175 cm. BMI = 70 / 1,75² ≈ 22,9. That is the normal range.
Questions
Does BMI see muscle?
No. An athlete with a lot of muscle can have a high index without extra fat. This is a screening figure, not a diagnosis.
Can height be entered as 1,75?
Yes. A number below 3 is read as metres. Anything else is read as centimetres.
Suitable for children?
No. Amounts for children depend on age and sex, and they are not calculated here.
