Sphere volume

The volume of a sphere and its surface area. For a diameter, divide it by two and enter the radius.

How it is calculated

Volume is four thirds of πr³. Surface area is 4πr². The calculator does not separate a solid ball from a hollow sphere: for the volume of a ball or a tank they are the same thing.

V = 4/3 πr³

Where the numbers come from

  • Radius

Example

Radius 3. Volume 4/3 × π × 27 ≈ 113,1. Surface 4π × 9 ≈ 113,1.

Questions

What if the diameter is known?

The radius is half the diameter. Enter that half.

Will it work for a hemisphere?

The volume of a hemisphere is half of the result. The surface of a hemisphere that includes its base is counted differently: the curved part is 2πr² and the flat circle is πr².

Units?

A radius in meters gives a volume in cubic meters.
