How it is calculated
The lower the number, the more mass you get for the same energy. Water and vegetables are usually lower than nuts and oil.
Density = kcal / grams
Where the numbers come from
- Calories — unit in the field: kcal
- Mass — unit in the field: g
Example
200 kcal in 100 g is 2 kcal per gram.
Questions
What counts as low?
The guide is fuzzy. People often talk about foods around 1–1,5 kcal/g, but that is not a medical limit.
Liquids too?
Yes, if you know both the calories and the mass.
Density in g/cm³?
That is a different density. It is worked out in the material-density calculator.
